550,000 lines of code ported from Gupta to .NET
Software manufacturer genese.de modernizes its patent and trademark applications
fecher has successfully finished porting a complex Gupta application for genese.de. The approximately 550,000 lines of code form the basis for genese’s two products, which are utilized by patent and trade mark attorneys. For more than 20 years, genese.de has been developing these products using Gupta. To maintain its position as the market leader in Europe, the company must always be able to react to changes in the industry. For this reason, it decided to implement a generational change in the developer tools used.
Last fall, after it had became evident that the envisaged redevelopment would be too time and cost-intensive, genese.de selected fecher to port its software and then develop it further using C#. In this manner, genese.de was able to retain the 20 – 30 people-years it invested in the code. Since switching to the more modern platform, genese.de can now modernize the applications’ GUIs and offer, for example, full-text search for patents and an optimized management system for graphic trademarks. The company also wants to create interfaces for administrative offices’ online services, to which its clients submit patent registrations and applications to inspect files and from which they download data.
